Job Description

SUMMARY OF MAIN DUTIES:

To work with students under the direction and supervision of certified personnel (primarily classroom teacher) and to assist students in reaching their goals

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist teacher in planning and implementing students’ academic, social/emotional and/or therapeutic goals
  • Assist teachers with coordinating all supplies and materials needed to implement the curricula
  • Carry out small group instruction as needed
  • Assist in one-on-one instruction as needed
  • Assist teachers, therapists and other service providers in maintaining appropriate data and records (i.e. attendance, progress monitoring assessment data)
  • Assist in lifting and carrying students as well as transfers from wheelchairs to equipment, as needed
  • Implement equipment, sensory, mobility, behavior and self-care plans per students’ needs
  • Responsible for the care of equipment, supplies and materials
  • Required to attend mandatory meetings that may exceed regular scheduled hours
  • Perform other duties as directed or required

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Actively seek and participate in ongoing professional development
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, and school-wide activities
  • Participate in classroom and consultation meetings as scheduled
  • Assist in the evacuation of children during fire drills and other emergencies

QUALIFICATIONS: 

SKILLS

  • Ability to relate and communicate sensitively to children and their families
  • Demonstration of patience, tact and professionalism in dealing with students, school staff members and families
  • Basic understanding of instructional concepts and practices
  • Ability to establish and sustain rapport with students
  • Ability to work as a member of a team; flexibility
  • Use and disclose PHI only as authorized, as necessary to carry out job duties and complete privacy and security training
  • Effective communication skills (interpersonal, oral and written)
  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to MS Word, Excel
  • Bilingual, Spanish-English preferred

PROFESSIONAL AND LEGAL STANDARDS

  • Use and disclose PHI only as authorized, as necessary to carry out job duties
  • Complete and maintain privacy and security training
  • Report suspected violations, including those of a supervisor or colleague
  • Professionalism in/outside school

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND EDUCATION

  • High school or general equivalency diploma; completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education and pass ParaPro Assessment; two (2) exceptions to this particular qualification: certification as a TA in another state or hold an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in an education-related field
  • A minimum of 2-3 years related experience, with prior experience working with children in an inclusive environment preferred 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment and physical requirements consistent with those of a typical school environment
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk continuously throughout the workday
  • Able to follow/run 25 yards to secure students for safety reasons such as elopement, as needed
  • Bend, stoop, squat, push and pull (10-15% of the time)
  • Kneel and reach above shoulder level occasionally (1-33% of the time)
  • Utilize the Computer (20%) of the time and other office equipment
  • Lift and carry students as well as transfer students from wheelchairs to equipment as required. Usually requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds frequently with the assistance of another staff member or adaptive equipment; 50 pounds independently (67-100% of the time)
  • Ability to participate in physical restraints of students, as needed and trained
  • Physically able to position physical/occupational therapy equipment, splints, etc. Ability to use various equipment (switches, cooking equipment, etc.)
